STD Testing Q & A

What are the signs and symptoms of a possible STD?

Women are more likely to experience signs and symptoms after contracting a sexually transmitted disease than men. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, fever, ulcers on or near the genitalia, swollen glands, vaginal or penile discharge, and pain during sex or urination. Patients who suspect a sexually transmitted disease should seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

Is treatment necessary if there is no pain or discomfort associated with the infection?

Yes. Any patient who believes they may have a sexually transmitted disease should seek treatment for two important reasons:

  • Untreated STDs continue to be spread to sexual partners
  • Untreated STDs can result in serious medical complications with systemic effects

Hollywood Walk-In Clinic is open 7 days a week to ensure patients have access to affordable diagnosis and treatment at a time that works best for them.

Can a patient be tested for STDs without the presence of signs or symptoms?

Yes, any patient may request to be screened for sexually transmitted diseases. Patients who have engaged in high risk behavior, who have recently learned that a partner has been unfaithful, or who have been sexually assaulted may benefit from testing for sexually transmitted diseases even when symptoms are not present. Screening for STDs can also be done preventively during a physical. In most cases, insurance covers testing when these criteria apply.

What if the symptoms don’t resolve after treatment has been initiated?

Hollywood Walk-In Clinic provides free follow up appointments for the same condition for a full week after the initial appointment. Patients who do not feel as if their symptoms have begun to improve 48 hours after treatment was initiated (the first antibiotic, in most cases) should return to the walk-in clinic for further evaluation and treatment, if required.
